Thankful for Rainbows of Hope

Thankful for Rainbows of Hope

by Dr. Ann Pearson on November 16, 2020

I thought I was going to be writing another top 10 list of reasons to be thankful this week but God had a different plan.  Maybe the “thankful list” will reappear next week if God doesn’t intervene with something better.  During this past week we had rain showers and to my amazement I saw one of the most beautiful rainbows ever.  The magnificent arch of color and the deep vibrant hues were breathtaking. The rainbow had a perfect arch which went from one side of the sky to the other.  My words cannot adequately describe what the sky revealed. It seemed God was saying, “I am right here with you, so don’t worry about anything.”  Reassurance lit up the sky!

Some say, a rainbow is a reflection of sun (or light) in water (or rain). It gives off a spectrum of colors. So you might could say that a rainbow is a reflection of God.  Every time a rainbow appears it can be a reminder of God’s covenant promise to each of us.

Covenant of God

In Genesis the significance of the rainbow is to always remember the covenant that God gave us to never flood the earth again. This came after God destroyed the earth by flooding it. God had Noah build an ark and had animals and his family to live on it. Then it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Several times in Genesis, it mentions the rainbow being a sign and a covenant promise that would never be broken.

Genesis 9: 8-13

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth.  I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:  I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”

What struck me so profoundly was when the scripture says God has made the covenant for all generations to come. That means God’s covenant promise was for Noah and the people of the time as well as everyone and everything going forward.  Wow, that is eternal and always forever!  We can be assured that God never breaks His promises. Once God says something, it is so. It won’t change. So this covenant not to flood the whole earth will never happen again.

Ezekiel 1:28

Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

The appearance of the rainbow shows us the likeness of the appearance of God. Since we see rainbows all over the world; it shows that God is all over the world.  God is always with us and is everywhere we are.

In Revelation 4:3 you see that a rainbow is like an emerald as it surrounds the throne.

Revelation 4:3

And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne.

Scriptures remind us of His covenant promises and to not lose hope.  When it seems we can’t see the light in the darkness, God is everywhere.  Let a rainbow be a reminder of God’s faithfulness and care. He promises that He will never leave us or forsake.  His promises are forever. Be Thankful.

Prayer:

Rainbows are a reminder that God is with us and His promises will never be broken.  I am thankful for our Heavenly Father that enfolds us in His care always. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

My love and prayers,

Ann
